Holdfast Security Systems achieves SafeContractor approval

We’re pleased to announce that we’ve just been awarded Safecontractor status for our Health & Safety policies and procedures

Safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors

Under the Safecontractor scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over 210 major, nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

Holdfast wins Gold Security Retailer of the Year Award

We’re delighted to announce that Holdfast won the Gold Award in the coveted Security Retailer of the Year title at the recent DIY Week awards ceremony.

Facing stiff competition from locksmiths around the country, Holdfast’s Simon Griffiths was overjoyed to be awarded the title at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.  “It came as a complete surprise to win and it’s a testament to all the hard work everyone at Holdfast has put in over the last year” he said, “it’s particularly appropriate as we celebrated our 25th anniversary in December”.

Meanwhile, the judges looked at a range of criteria – including shop layout, presentation and future plans – before making their decision.  Holdfast’s recent upgrades to the shop and extensive range of security products on display in their showroom were instrumental in the decision going in their favour.

Simon added “we have seen a growth in a wide area of business; particularly in domestic security with the recent furore about UPVC door security”. He further commented: “The award demonstrates Holdfast Security Systems’ on-going awareness of the ever-changing security industry”.

Mul-T-Lock Interactive Patent Expiry

If you use the Mul-T-Lock Interactive key system, used to secure a great many properties, including schools. colleges and apartments, you should be aware that the patent has now expired.

What does this this mean for Interactive users?  Well, primarily, the restriction on the unauthorised duplication of keys will cease and it will be possible for key cutters to legally obtain key blanks for the Interactive system and cut keys without your knowledge.

You can rest assured that we at Holdfast will maintain the strict procedures we currently have with regard to the supply of keys for all our master key systems, to protect our customers’ keys, however there will be no restrictions should Timpson’s or other key cutters decide to stock the key blanks.

If you feel this may be an issue there are a couple of alternatives, including:

1)         Replacing just the keys with Interactive + keys so that the patent restriction that applies to the keys is maintained without the need to replace the cylinders

2)         Replacing the cylinders to work under a new key system with patent protection

3)         Replacing the cylinders on just the critical areas of your building – these could be on the Interactive + system so that one key could be used for both the old and new cylinders.

If you want to talk about the implications for Interactive key holders why not give us a call on 01270 505902

What is cylinder snapping

What is cylinder snapping?

You may have read in the newspapers, or seen on the television, about a new security threat – cylinder snapping.

The first thing to What is cylinder snapping? You may have read in the newspapers, seen on the Internet or the television, about a new security threat – cylinder snapping. The first thing to say is it’s not a new threat! The euro profile cylinder (used on almost every PVCu and composite door in the world) was invented in the 1920s – probably as a method of producing a cylinder with the least amount of metal possible – and the first anti-snap patent was submitted about 3 years later, so it was almost immediately compromised. So, as locksmiths it’s nothing new to us but what’s happened recently is that the information has started to appear on the Internet; including videos on how to do it on YouTube. This has led to a dramatic rise in the number of attacks on euro profile cylinders, and nationwide it seems to be accepted that of about 27% of successful break-ins through UPVC doors are due to the cylinder being snapped – in some areas it’s as high as 60-70% – so you can see it’s a big problem.

How are cylinders snapped?

Well, if you look at the design of the cylinder you can see that it is shaped rather like a big keyhole when viewed end on. Then you can see there’s a large cam in the middle of the cylinder with a threaded hole just below it.

The problem is that it makes the cylinder very weak and easy to break using mole grips or similar. How can I stop my cylinder being snapped? There are two options – firstly to upgrade the cylinder to a higher security version where even when snapped it cannot be opened. This is a simple operation but make sure the anti-snap cylinder you purchase will provide you with this protection. We always recommend a cylinder tested to Sold Secure Diamond level. Alternatively you could upgrade the handles and cylinder using the TS007 star rating. This will be a more expensive option, as well as probably being more difficult to fit, and you will need to make sure what you are buying is suitable for the type of door and lock you have.
